What Can Pet Food Assistance Provide?

Pet food pantries, animal shelters, and some food banks distribute donated dog and cat food. Other supplies, such as cat litter, depend on availability.

Assistance may cover only part of your pets’ monthly needs. Brands, food types, and quantities may also vary.

Organizations Supporting Pet Food Assistance

Organizations may distribute food, connect pet owners with resources, or fund local programs.

ASPCA
Previously partnered with Food Bank For New York City to provide dog and cat food through community locations. Check which services are currently available locally.

Humane World for Animals
Supports local programs through grants and the distribution of pet food and supplies. Pet owners seeking help should look for programs or partners serving their area.

Houston Humane Society
Operates Pet Pantry programs in Greater Houston, including public distribution events and a monthly assistance program with separate requirements.

The Animal Foundation
Provides a Community Pet Food Pantry in Las Vegas, Nevada. Check pickup schedules and appointment instructions.

Feeding Pets of the Homeless
Focuses on helping people experiencing homelessness care for their pets. It offers a partner network and a resource map.

How to Find Pet Food Assistance Near Me

Add your city or ZIP code when searching for pet food assistance near me, pet food pantry near me, dog food assistance, or cat food assistance.

Check the “Pet Resources” or “Pet Food Pantry” section of local animal shelter websites. Food banks may also suggest resources.

On the Feeding Pets of the Homeless map, enter your city and state or ZIP code, then look for a Pet Food Provider. A Donation Site collects donations; it is not a location where people seeking assistance should go to receive food.

Before visiting, ask:

Is dog or cat food currently available?
Do you serve my address?
Do I need to register, make an appointment, or bring documents?
What are the pickup schedule and assistance limits?

Who May Receive Assistance?

Programs may help low-income households, seniors on fixed incomes, people who have lost their jobs, or those experiencing housing difficulties.

Each provider has its own requirements regarding residency, income, public benefits, or pets’ spay/neuter status. If you lack the requested documents, ask about acceptable alternatives or other suitable programs.

Examples of Pet Food Assistance Programs by State

The programs below may help you find support in your area. Before applying or picking up food, confirm that the program serves your address, as many providers assist only specific cities or counties.

State	Program	Area and Details to Check
California	Berkeley Humane — Pet Food Pantry	Distribution in Berkeley; monthly schedule, with no appointment required.
Texas	Houston Humane Society — Pet Pantry	Greater Houston; public events and a monthly assistance program.
New York	Long Island Cares — Baxter’s Pet Pantry	Nassau and Suffolk County residents; appointments are required at the Lindenhurst location.
Florida	Humane Society of Tampa Bay — Food Assistance	Tampa Bay; Animeals is available for seniors and homebound residents. Ask about participation requirements.
Michigan	Humane Society of Huron Valley — Bountiful Bowls	Washtenaw County; requires an application, documentation of financial need, and pets to be spayed/neutered or have a plan for the procedure.
Georgia	Coco’s Cupboard — Food Assistance	Based in Gay, Georgia; submit an assistance request and confirm the service area.

How to Apply and Pick Up Food

Confirm the service area and eligibility requirements.
Complete an application or schedule an appointment if required.
Prepare the requested documents and information about your pets.
Check food availability, the address, and pickup times.
Ask how often and for how long assistance is available.

If you cannot visit in person, ask about someone collecting food for you or home delivery. These options are not available everywhere.

If You Need Emergency Pet Food Assistance

Explain that you need urgent support. If food is unavailable, ask about another distribution location or the next pickup opportunity. Applications may not be processed the same day.
